General Description: The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a fruit from the nightshade family native to South America. Despite botanically being a fruit, it's generally eaten and prepared like a vegetable.  Usually red when mature, tomatoes can also come in a variety of colors, including yellow, orange, green, and purple. Tomatoes are easy to grow and are becoming a more and more popular crop. A couple of tomato plants will produce hundreds of fruit and keep you in fresh tomatoes from mid Summer right through to early Autumn. 

How to grow: 

Growing Tomatoes in Containers

  1. Use a large pot or container with drainage holes in the bottom.
  2. Use loose, well-draining soil.
  3. Plant one tomato plant per pot.
  4. Taller varieties may need to be staked.
  5. Place the pot in a sunny spot with 6 to 8 hours of full sun a day.
  6. Keep soil moist.
