Official Name:  Antirrhinum majus

General description: Cool-weather snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) produce spikes of flowers in all colors but blue. Snapdragons grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 through 10 as perennials, but these short-lived plants are usually treated as annuals in all climates. In areas with mild winters, you can sow snapdragon seeds indoors in late summer for fall transplanting, and they will bloom throughout winter. You can also start them in late winter and grow them as spring and early summer plants, although they may not survive hot summer temperatures.

How to grow:

Fill a seedling flat to within 1/4 inch of the rim with a sterile potting soil. Fill a tray with 1 inch of water and set the flat inside. Allow the soil in the flat to absorb the water through the bottom drainage holes for 30 to 60 minutes, or until the soil surface becomes moist. Empty the excess water from the tray.

Sow the snapdragon seeds on the soil surface. Space the seeds about 2 inches apart in rows that are also set 2 inches apart. Press on the seeds lightly with your fingers so they are in full contact with the soil, but don't cover them with soil because they require light to germinate.

Mist the soil surface lightly to ensure it's evenly moist. Cover the flat with a clear plastic bag and set it in a 60 to 70 degree Fahrenheit location that receives indirect light to germinate. The snapdragons usually sprout within seven to 10 days.

Remove the plastic bag once the snapdragons emerge from the soil. Move the flat to a location with six to eight hours of daily sunlight. Water the seedlings when the soil surface feels dry.

Transplant the snapdragons outdoors when they are about 8 weeks old and about 4 to 6 inches tall. Plant at the same depth they were growing at previously, and space them 8 to 14 inches apart in all directions.

Benefits: Snapdragon plant has been employed in poultices on tumors and ulcers. It is effective in the treatment of all kinds of inflammation and is also used on hemorrhoids. The plant is harvested in the summer when in flower and is dried for later use.
