Official Name:  Brassica oleracea Gongylodes

General description: Kohlrabi is a biennial vegetable, a low, stout cultivar of wild cabbage. Its unique name is derived from the German word for cabbage (kohl) and turnip (rabi). The kohlrabi originates from the northeast of Europe. Its consumption has stayed mainly in this area, while in others it is hardly known.

How to grow: Kohlrabi prefers rich, well-drained soil in full sun. You can plant this cool-season crop for a spring or fall harvest in the North, or for a winter harvest in the South. For a spring crop plant the seeds outside after danger of a hard frost: sow in midsummer for a fall crop, or in fall for a winter crop.

Benefits: Kohlrabi is an excellent source of vitamin C and potassium. It is high in fiber (5 grams per cup) which helps you feel fuller longer, and is great for your digestive health. Cruciferous veggies, of which kohlrabi is one, are known for their high levels of antioxidants which help fight cancer and heart disease
