Official Name:  Asparagus setaceus

General description: Wiry shrub with branches scrambling or climbing. One of the fastest-growing least demanding houseplants.  Asparagus ferns are not ferns at all, they belong to the asparagus family.  They need bright indirect light, without full sun.  Insufficient light will result in yellow needles that drop.  They prefer rich, slightly acidic well-drained soil.  They produce large, tuberous roots that can become potbound quickly.  If pruning is necessary, cut stems all the way back to the root rather than just shortening them. Plumosus comes from the Latin word "plume" because the leaves are feather-like. They produce soft, fine lime-green needle-like leaves that can cascade down a container on pendulous stems or can be trained up a trellis like a vine.

How to grow: Growing asparagus fern indoors takes a little more effort. Humidity is necessary and indoor areas are often dry because of winter heat. Mist the plant daily and provide a nearby pebble tray to keep the tiny leaves from turning brown and dropping. The fern may dry out to the point it appears dead; however, outdoor springtime temperatures generally revive them. Keep the plant well watered in all situations and repot every few years. Care of asparagus ferns indoors involves misting the arching stems to provide humidity to the plant. When you grow asparagus ferns outside in summer, asparagus fern care involves watering, fertilizing to encourage growth and occasionally pruning out dead stems. Asparagus ferns prefer to be pot bound, so yearly division is not needed or desirable. Combine this reliable specimen with summer blooms and foliage plants for an attractive container. A spiky, shade loving plant does well at the center of the pot, surrounded by the cascading branches of the asparagus fern.

Benefits: Uses for asparagus fern: Asparagus fern is primarily used as a filler plant in containers of mixed flowers growing during the summer. It works in wall boxes, hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters of all kinds.
